Constructing My First Computerized Grading Sheets

Filed under: Professional Development, TEFL — Sunday, March 19th, 2006 @ 12:34 pm

I downloaded a free gradebook template from Microsoft a few weeks ago. As templates go, it’s not too bad. I tinkered with it a little, as detailed below, and saved it as a template for my classes at Sookdae. I noticed on the Sookdae intranet that my class lists exist in the typical class list tabular format, with a name beginning every line, followed by some additional information (major, student number, etc.), followed in turn by little boxes for recording attendance. I couldn’t copy the tables all at once without messing up the spreadsheet code, but I could copy line by line (excluding the slots for attendance recording) the student information. I modified the template so that the first several colums matched the Sookdae attendance lists. Then, ta-da!–I just copied and pasted each line in the student information section of the spreadsheet. All the coded cells remain intact, just waiting for me to fill them in with student marks. Finally, I had to make notes of who was repeating, as Sookdae has a policy that repeaters may not be given anything higher than an A-. I just added “Repeat” after the names of the students who were repeating. The entire process from start to finish took under an hour, and the copying and pasting went really quickly. As for the actual grades, they will go into columns in the relevant sections. I named one column “Attendance” but that one won’t get filled out until my regular attendance records are complete. The other columns will be titled with assigment or test names.

It’s odd, but little things like this, i.e. constructing for the first time an Excel program to organize student grades, make me quite happy! I do regret not knowing spreadsheet code (my last spreadsheet work was done on Apple Macs in junior high school), but hopefully that can come later. At least I was able to modify the template where I needed to to suit my needs.
